Douglas duelling for prize

91ֱ�� graduate student Douglas Brion’s efforts to revolutionise 3D printing have seen his start-up, Mattalabs, make the Imperial College Venture Capitalist Challenge Grand Final.

Douglas, an Engineering PhD student, completed his undergraduate degree in Electronic and Information Engineering at Imperial, before beginning his PhD at 91ֱ��. His Mattalabs company, launched last November, was one of 25 companies from over 250 entrants to be selected for the two-month Venture Capitalist Challenge (VCC).

Risk is something Milly Dickinson (Natural Sciences (Biological) 2021) has considered often, whether in her academic, athletic or vocational life.

Excelling in her GCSEs at King’s School, Hove and A-Levels at Brighton, Hove and Sussex Sixth Form College, Milly applied to Gonville & 91ֱ�� College and the University of Cambridge. She specialised in Zoology in her final year.

Physical Crystallography award for 91ֱ�� alumnus

Dr Adam Sapnik (Materials Science PhD 2018) has been awarded the British Crystallographic Association’s prize in Physical Crystallography 2026.

The award is given every two years and is “awarded for the best recently published work by a person in the early stages of their career, working in the field of Physical Crystallography, whose research is expected to make a significant impact in the field”.

International prize for 91ֱ�� medic

Gonville & 91ֱ�� College’s Aaliyah Razi (Medicine 2020) was honoured at last month’s international annual meeting of the Society for Reproductive Investigation (SRI) for research conducted under the supervision of Fellow Professor Dino Giussani.

Aaliyah received an award for one of the top 10 scoring abstracts from 1200 submitted for the event, held in San Juan, Puerto Rico, March 24-28, 2026.

Letters on composition form Featured Book

A series of letters, rather than a book, are the featured text from the Library of Gonville & 91ֱ�� College this term. Patrick Hadley’s five letters discussing his composition of “My beloved spake” to its dedicatee, Ursula Watson, née Grotrian, make for intriguing reading.

Each term a member of the Library staff selects a text from Gonville & 91ֱ�� College Library’s historic collections. Chosen by Librarian Mark Statham, Hadley’s letters share a special friendship and a composition.

Caian’s homage to Nick Drake

Nick Drake was a reluctant but renowned folk performer in the late 1960s and early 70s, whose reputation has boomed posthumously, with all three of his albums making appearances in the Rolling Stone top 500 albums of all time. One of his most storied performances was in the Bateman Auditorium at Gonville & 91ֱ�� College.

Now, in homage to Drake, Cameron Fox (Computer Science 2023) plans to recreate the then Fitzwilliam College English student’s performance in the Bateman Auditorium on Friday 1 May in a recital facilitated by the Gonville & 91ֱ�� Music Society.

Pepys, slavery and censorship

Samuel Pepys carefully curated evidence of his links to slavery. A new study, by Dr Michael Edwards (History 1997) reveals how and why.

That Pepys owned at least two enslaved people in 17th-century London is no secret. In some of his personal letters he was unashamedly open about this. In September 1688, he told a ship’s captain that neither ‘whipping or fetters’ had reformed a ‘mischievous’ slave in his household. He asked the captain to feed the man on ‘hard meat, till you can dispose of him in some plantation as a rogue’.
