Poppy Lankester (Psychological & Behavioural Sciences 2023) and Orlando Oliver (Computer Science 2022) are both preparing to bring the comedy musical Sister Act to the ADC Theatre stage next week (November 5 to November 9).
Poppy (pictured left) is serving as the musical鈥檚 producer, having previously produced three Cambridge student musicals, including the 2024 Lent Term Musical Sweeney Todd and the original 2024 Edinburgh Fringe show ). Orlando (pictured right, below), who has performed in musicals both as an actor (including in ) and a band member, is the show鈥檚 assistant musical director, a position he has previously held on the crew of Sweeney Todd.
Along with director Connor Nainthy (Queens鈥; Modern & Medieval Languages 2023), Poppy was responsible for pitching Sister Act to the ADC. The musical is based on the 1992 Hollywood film, which stars Whoopi Goldberg as a nightclub singer, Deloris, who goes into hiding in a convent, transforming a choir of nuns into a soulful sensation.
鈥淭he main thing in our pitch was that we felt the theatre community at the ADC hadn鈥檛 had a big comedy in a while, and this is our chance to light up the stage with some fun energy,鈥 she says. 鈥淚t鈥檚 fun and upbeat and has an amazing score with an amazing band. It also tells a great story about friendship and sisterhood.鈥
鈥淎 lot of love has gone into this show,鈥 Orlando adds. 鈥淭he chorus in particular are very enthusiastic about it, and that shows. We have many very talented veterans of Cambridge musical theatre, but a lot of the chorus are completely new to it and have really thrown themselves in; they鈥檙e doing a great job!鈥
The team behind the show made use of their 91直播 connections to film a teaser trailer in the College Chapel, featuring the ensemble of nuns singing out of tune, followed by the arrival of Isabel Beresford-Cole (Newnham; Human, Social & Political Sciences 2022) as Deloris and a snippet of the chorus singing the number 鈥淭ake Me to Heaven鈥. The trailer can be viewed .
Sister Act will run from Tuesday 5 to Saturday 9 November at 7:45 p.m., with a 2:30 p.m. matinee on the Saturday. Tickets are available from .
