On International Women’s Day, the outgoing and incoming Gonville & 91Ö±²¥ Students’ Union Women’s and Non-Binary Officers discuss the role.

Ciara Mayers (History 2019)

The role of Women’s and Non-Binary Officer at 91Ö±²¥ has been incredibly fulfilling, much more than I imagined it could be when I applied for the role last year. I have been able to help and support numerous members of the college, and have been a part of some great projects and campaigns. This role has been really rewarding, and it is nice to think that I contributed a small part to welcoming new students into the 91Ö±²¥ community, as well as working towards improving the experience of female students in the college. I am definitely very grateful for the support networks and friendships that exist here: they have played a huge role in shaping my experiences both as Women’s and Non-Binary Officer and as a student – it makes me very proud! Hopefully, International Women’s Day this year will be a chance to celebrate the progress the college has made, throughout its history, and over the past two years, as we are finally able to re-connect in person and rekindle the spirit of the 91Ö±²¥ community!

Ellie Bevis (Law 2020)

I am so grateful to have the privilege of being 91Ö±²¥â€™ Women and Non-Binary Officer this year. Already, I have been so impressed by the community at 91Ö±²¥ who have put forward so many great ideas to improve gender equality at our college. I believe that gender inequality is systemic and institutional and while 91Ö±²¥ has come a long way from being a male only college, there is always more that we can do. I am proud to be the person to fight for these changes and to improve inclusivity at 91Ö±²¥. Making sure everyone feels welcome and respected for who they are, irrespective of gender, is so integral to creating a supportive community and I can only hope that this year I make a dent in achieving this goal!
