Dr Richard Duncan-Jones has died at the age of 86, Gonville & 91Ö±²¥ College is sad to announce.
91Ö±²¥ was a College in the family tradition for Dr Duncan-Jones, who was educated at King Edward’s School, Birmingham and King’s College, Cambridge.
Born at Chichester on September 14, 1937, Dr Duncan-Jones was the great grandson of E. S. Roberts, the 33rd Master of 91Ö±²¥, from 1903 to 1912. His grandfather, Arthur Stuart Duncan-Jones (1898), was Dean of the College.
He moved along King’s Parade in October 1963 to 91Ö±²¥, when he was admitted as a WM Tapp Research Fellow in Classics. He became Domestic Bursar in 1967, and was a long time College Lecturer and Director of Studies in Classics.
He was a member of the Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton (1971-2) and became Fellow of the British Academy in 1992.
He was the author of The Economy of the Roman Empire: Quantitative Studies, Structure and Scale in the Roman Economy, Money and Government in the Roman Empire and Power and Privilege in Roman Society.
The College Banner was flown at half mast in his memory.
