Creativity is the focus of this term's Featured Book from Gonville & 91直播 College Library.
Each term, a member of the Library staff selects a text from the College鈥檚 historic collections. Humane Industry, by Thomas Powell, was the text chosen by Sara Fedeli, Assistant Librarian (Reader Services).
Published posthumously in 1661, nearly a hundred years before the 贰苍肠测肠濒辞辫茅诲颈别 of Diderot and D鈥橝lembert, Humane Industry contains a remarkably varied list of crafts, inventions and creative feats.
Sara says: 鈥淲hile working in the Lower Library, we do not usually have enough time to read through a whole book while cataloguing it, but this was definitely an exception. I could not stop flicking through its pages and reading about the achievements that Powell thought the humane should be remembered for. Some seem very silly from a modern perspective, while others have stood the test of time and are still considered major advances in human history.鈥
