The fun of theatre

“I enjoy doing theatre because I don’t have the pressure – it’s just fun,” says Georgia Fullerton (English 2024).

“I don't do any sports or anything, but it's such a social extracurricular and everyone is interested in what I'm interested in. It's always such a nice atmosphere.

“I like the process of a production – and being on stage.”

Georgia used to dance and enjoys being able to do so in The Great Gatsby, which she is performing in later this month. Other dancing opportunities at Cambridge come in musicals, which do not appeal so much to Georgia, pictured.A smiling woman in a garden with a scarf

In this centenary celebratory stage adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald's renowned novel, Georgia does not have a starring role. She is in the ensemble, creating an atmosphere with party scenes and dance numbers – “very Charleston-y” – while also doing set changes.

When Georgia applied to university, her subject of choice was English and Drama everywhere except Cambridge. She had no need to worry about finding a creative outlet, with many theatrical opportunities.

“The theatre scene is really welcoming,” she adds. “The freshers’ play was really fun; joining with everyone who was also new, rather than suddenly jumping into auditions with people who had been here for years already.”

She is able to combine her personal and academic interest – “just yesterday we did a whole class on audience and drama… I thought ‘I’m going to take it and use it’” – and 91ֱ’ Shakespeare Society is another performing opportunity.
