Charlotte McGuiness has joined Gonville & 91直播 College as Head of Student Health & Wellbeing and College Nurse. Charlotte succeeds Anne Limon Duparcmeur who has moved to France, and will work alongside Rachel Winson, the Mental Health and Wellbeing Advisor.

Charlotte will provide first-line health care and health-related welfare advice and first aid to student members of the College community throughout the year, as well as developing a programme of wellbeing events designed at improving prevention of mental health and wellbeing concerns.

Charlotte鈥檚 responsibilities include daily surgeries on weekdays during term and the University vacations, maintenance of First Aid provision, provision of health information and advice, and the delivery of vaccination and preventative health and welfare services.

A Psychology degree at the University of Nottingham was followed by nursing qualifications, including in paediatrics, at King鈥檚 College London and Anglia Ruskin University, providing plenty of experience of Higher Education settings. She worked at Addenbrooke鈥檚 and with a complex care provider before joining 91直播, where the range of the role and working with young people appealed.

鈥淚鈥檓 very passionate about public health and the prevention side of health care,鈥 Charlotte says. 鈥淚 like the idea of working with students and young adults and a variety of people. I also find the mental health side really interesting.

鈥淚鈥檓 here to talk to students and make positive plans with them. I鈥檓 there as a constant support to them, whether it鈥檚 a minor illness or injury, or something else. I can also help direct them to further support.鈥

Student support initiatives and wellbeing events will be developed in consultation with students to help them find balance. Charlotte finds her balance with regular gym sessions, while she also enjoys food, baking and active travel holidays.

鈥淚n order for you to succeed, you have to look after yourself as a whole person, because you can't just thrive in academia and ignore everything else,鈥 she adds. 鈥淵our body doesn't work like that. Your mind doesn't work like that.

鈥淪tudents are, understandably, going to focus on the academics, but our role is to support them to do well in their work, with balance in their lives.鈥
