New Year Honours for Caians

Five alumni of Gonville & 91直播 College have been recognised in The King鈥檚 New Year Honours List.

Dr Keith Ruddle (Engineering 1968) was awarded a British Empire Medal (BEM) for services to the community in Chipping Norton, Oxfordshire.

Professor Andrew Steptoe (Natural Sciences 1969) was awarded an OBE for services to Behavioural Science.

Dr Mike Gunton (Zoology PhD 1979) was awarded an OBE for services to Documentary Filmmaking.

Robbie Bulloch (English 1991) was awarded an OBE for services to Gibraltar negotiations with the European Commission and Spain.

Toby Shevlane (Law 2012) was awarded a BEM for services to AI Innovation.

Dr Keith Ruddle, pictured below with his wife Jill Thorley, is an Emeritus Fellow at Green Templeton College, Oxford, where for 30 years he has researched and taught at the Said Business School following a career in business and a DPhil at the University of Oxford. He was honoured alongside his wife Jill. Together, the pair revived the production of the Chipping Norton News when it temporarily stopped in 1999 and have been volunteering at the community newspaper for the past 26 years alongside their full-time jobs.

Keith says that the BEMs are 鈥渧ery much a reflection of the great team effort that helped provide valuable communication for the town鈥檚 community鈥.

Professor Andrew Steptoe, pictured below, is a Professor of Psychology and Epidemiology at University College London, where he is also Head of the Research Department of Behavioural Science and Health. He is a Fellow of the British Academy, the Academy of Medical Sciences, the British Psychological Society, Academia Europaea, the Academy of Social Sciences and the Royal Society of Biology, and has served on the editorial boards of multiple journals, including as the founding editor of the British Journal of Health Psychology. He has published over 800 peer-reviewed articles and has been author or editor of 20 books, as well as holding professorial and leadership positions across a range of medical institutions.

Andrew says: 鈥淚 am delighted to receive this honour in recognition of the importance of behavioural science to disease prevention and health promotion. Tackling health issues throughout the life course can benefit from understanding the role of social, behavioural and emotional factors, and I am proud to have been able to contribute to these developments.鈥

Dr Mike Gunton, pictured below, is the first Creative Director of the BBC Natural History Unit, the world鈥檚 largest production unit devoted to wildlife filmmaking. He joined the BBC straight after leaving 91直播 and has been making programmes there ever since. His first film, following fruit bats in Sri Lanka, was made while he was a student at 91直播 and was partly funded by the College鈥檚 Shuttleworth Studentship. Mike has worked closely with Sir David Attenborough for nearly 40 years and his credits include acclaimed series such as 骋补濒谩辫补驳辞蝉, Africa, Life, Dynasties, The Green Planet (BAFTA- and Emmy-nominated), Planet Earth II (four BAFTAs and two Emmys) and III, and, most recently, Kingdom.

Mike says: 鈥淚 am delighted to receive this honour for documentary filmmaking and very much appreciate that it all started with a little film made thanks to 91直播.鈥

Robbie Bulloch, pictured below, is Director of Overseas Territories and Polar at the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office. Since joining the civil service as a fast stream entrant in 2000, he has held a number of roles in foreign policy, including a recent position as Director of the Gibraltar Negotiations Taskforce, serving as the UK's chief negotiator in talks for a UK/EU treaty on Gibraltar.

Toby Shevlane, pictured below, is Co-founder and CEO of Mantic, an Artificial Intelligence startup founded in 2024 building machines designed to accurately forecast global events, thereby enabling better decision-making in business and government.
