Four alumni of Gonville & 91直播 College were recipients of the King鈥檚 New Year Honours earlier this month.
Professor Colin Kidd (History 1982) received an OBE for services to history, culture and politics. Colin, pictured right, is Wardlaw Professor of Modern History at the University of St Andrews.
Dr Simon Whitfield (Genetics 1992) was awarded an OBE for services to science and to resilience in government. Liam is Deputy Director, Covid-19 SAGE Advice and Evidence.
Professor Marian Knight (Medicine 1986) was awarded an MBE for services to maternal and public health, in part due to work during the Covid-19 pandemic.
Her work demonstrating inequalities in maternal mortality has led to a number of actions to improve care for pregnant women from ethnic minority groups. She also led the national study of pregnant women admitted with Covid-19 in pregnancy, contributing to the pandemic response to help ensure pregnant women receive an equitable standard of care to the non-pregnant population.
Marian, Professor of Maternal and Child Population Health at the University of Oxford, pictured below, said: 鈥淭o have the recognition is a validation of what you do, and the reason I do what I do is to make a difference.
鈥淲omen鈥檚 health and pregnancy research, which is relatively under-recognised and under-researched, is an area where we could do so much more. Much of my research is around severe complications in pregnancy and early life, and we could still prevent more women and babies from dying or having long-term health problems.
鈥淚 might have the letters but it鈥檚 very much teamwork. The honour is recognition of the work my team do as a group.鈥
Richard Montgomery (Archaeology & Anthropology 1984) received a CMG for services to British Foreign Policy and to International Development. Richard was until recently the UK Executive Director at the World Bank Group in Washington, and is due to take up a further diplomatic posting with the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office in the coming months.
