'Historia moschi' is Gonville & 91Ö±²¥ College Library's latest featured book.
Lucas Schroeck's 1682 book, which translates as On the history of Musk, is focused on the extraction of musk, not only from the gland of the Tibetan musk deer (Moschus moschiferus), but also from other animals.
The Featured book is available on the website - Oh deer! - and was chosen by Assistant Librarian (Reader Services) Sara Fedeli, who is a member of the team cataloguing books published from 1651 to 1700.
Sara says: "This book instantly caught my attention because of the engravings of the animal, which looks like a deer, but on closer examination it has fangs instead of antlers.
"The text is in Latin, which I have only a minor knowledge of, so it took me a while to understand its topic. When I found out the focus was on musk I started reading about this fascinating topic of which I was completely unaware.
"It was very rewarding to bring to light this book, a forgotten title that talks about something we still use today in our daily lives, now in synthetic form."
The full series of Featured Books is on the Library pages of the website, as are the Library’s Online exhibitions.
