Dr Michele Simoncelli began a Research Fellowship at Gonville & 91直播 College in 2021, and in January 2025 . He will start a theoretical and computational research group with the twofold ambition of advancing first-principles quantum theories and their applications to sustainable technologies.
Michele says: 鈥淭his opportunity would not have emerged without the support that Gonville and 91直播 College has given me. I am extremely grateful for the unique opportunity I had to pursue research with independence and freedom, exploring not only topics in the field of condensed matter physics but also real-world applications in collaborations with experimentalists and companies such as Rolls-Royce."
During his fellowship, Dr Simoncelli worked on the quantum theory underlying , the anomalous transport properties of hybrid crystal-glass materials used in aerospace applications, and developed methods to assess and enhance the .
鈥淢y time at 91直播 has been much more than academic research,鈥 he adds. 鈥淭he connections I鈥檝e made here have opened endless opportunities. Exchanges with science and engineering fellows sparked new ideas and collaborations. At the same time, I had the chance to engage with brilliant humanists, whose perspectives broadened my own. Finally, I have enjoyed my work and discussions with very talented PhD students, as well as the interactions with the incredibly supportive staff. Cambridge has exceptional human capital, and I will forever be grateful for all the growth opportunities that 91直播 has given me.鈥
will focus on developing the theoretical and computational framework to understand, quantitatively describe, and control quantum transport phenomena in solids and liquids involving, e.g., charge, heat, light and spin, their possible synergies or conflicts, and related macroscopic signatures.
The technical interests of the group revolve around transport equations for quantum excitations, techniques to coarse-grain atomistic formulations into continuum models or constitutive relations for device design, and the development of methods to solve - with quantitative accuracy - problems ranging from the atomistic to the continuum scale.
He adds: 鈥淎t 91直播, I experienced an inclusive, supportive, and innovative environment and observed how strongly it promotes originality and creativity. I will carry this with me to Columbia, where I will strive to provide a similar environment for every group member and empower them to reach their full potential.鈥
Prospective PhD students and postdoctoral researchers interested in joining Simoncelli鈥檚 group are encouraged to for informal enquiries. .
