David Elstein

David Elstein is a writer, producer and broadcaster. After beginning his career at the BBC and then ITV, he founded Brook Productions, was Managing Director of Primetime Television, Director of Programmes at Thames Television and Head of Programmes at BSkyB, and launched Channel 5 as its Chief Executive.

He has also been a Visiting Professor at the Universities of Oxford, Westminster and Stirling, and Chairman of the National Film and Television School, the British Screen Advisory Council, Really Useful Theatres, Screen Digest, the Commercial Radio Companies Association, Sparrowhawk Investments Ltd, DCD Media, Luther Pendragon Holdings, the Broadcasting Policy Group and openDemocracy. He was a non-executive Director at Virgin Media, Orion Holdings and Primacom AG.

His production credits include three episodes of The World at War (one of which he also wrote), the Emmy-winning drama series Concealed Enemies, the Oscar-winning feature film Ida, and more than 200 editions of the prime-time ITV current affairs programme This Week, which he edited for four years. He wrote and produced the audio-dramas July 1914: Countdown to War and 1918: Countdown to Peace. His lectures at the University of Oxford were published as The Political Structure of UK Broadcasting, 1949-99, and he co-authored the book Mau Mau Interrogator. He contributes regularly to newspapers, journals, radio and TV on a range of media issues.
