Research interests

My research sits at the intersection of intellectual history and political theory, with a particular focus on the relatively new fields of global intellectual history and comparative political theory (and theology). At the moment, it most often focuses on the relationship between law, empire, and religion.

I am currently working on three research projects in relation to these wider themes. The first is derived from my PhD, and explores how messianic Muslim ideas about worldmaking in the age of European empire might relate to the liberal international projects which took shape in the name of humanity throughout the twentieth century. The other two move across religious traditions in a more explicitly comparative manner, and emerged from questions which I began to ask during my PhD. One explores the relationship between sovereignty and heresy, asking what a global intellectual history of sovereignty from the perspective of the heretic might reveal about the state. The other interrogates the relationship between religious law and international law, focusing on how both seek not to enact but constrain the will of those with power.
